Through many years of study and performance, I have come to understand that there is no single path to learning the piano. Each student has a different background, ability, and learning style, so it is important to find an approach that fits the individual. My teaching goal is to help students build strong fundamental skills while developing musical understanding and independent thinking, so they can form their own musical voice.
I believe music education requires a balance between shared principles and personal growth. While music follows certain rules, students should not simply imitate their teacher. Instead, they should learn how to combine what they are taught and develop their own musical judgment. I encourage students to think actively about the music, understand structure and the composer’s intent, and make informed musical choices.
In terms of technique, I believe technique should serve musical expression, not exist as an end goal. While technical training is essential, I prefer to develop technique through repertoire whenever possible. This helps students learn how to control sound and movement in a musical context, rather than through mechanical repetition.
I also place strong emphasis on listening and rhythm. Students must first learn to hear the music clearly in their mind before playing. Singing, clapping rhythms, and listening activities help students build a strong sense of sound and timing. For intermediate students, I use repertoire such as Burgmüller Op.100, Clementi Sonatinas, and Tchaikovsky’s Album for the Young, along with technical exercises like Czerny Op.599 and basic Chopin Waltzes, to develop coordination and control.
Most importantly, I believe in teaching students how to learn. I guide students to practice with clear goals and effective strategies, helping them develop focus, discipline, and patience. I also encourage students to listen to recordings and attend student recitals or concerts to build musical awareness. Through a healthy and structured learning process, students can explore a wide range of repertoire and experience lasting growth and satisfaction through music.
